Lydia Elizondo Announces Candidacy for Hidalgo County District Attorney -November 12, 2025
Veteran attorney pledges to restore faith, fairness, and integrity in the justice system
MCALLEN, TEXAS — Surrounded by friends and family, Hidalgo County attorney and lifelong Rio Grande Valley resident Lydia Elizondo officially announced her candidacy for Hidalgo County Criminal District Attorney, vowing to take on corruption and rebuild public trust in the county’s justice system through honesty, accountability, and equal justice for all.
Born and raised in Weslaco, Lydia is a proud daughter of the Rio Grande Valley — one of six children in a close-knit family that taught her faith, hard work, and the importance of service. She and her husband, Bill, have been married for 17 years, and she is the proud mom of one son, Michael Edward.
A graduate of Weslaco High School and the University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA), Lydia earned her degree in just three and a half years and became a certified Texas teacher in secondary English. After teaching in Weslaco and Mission, she followed a new calling — the law.
Lydia went on to earn her law degree from St. Mary’s University School of Law, passing the Texas Bar before graduation. She began her legal career at the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office, where she gained firsthand experience in prosecution and the pursuit of justice.
After several years in private practice and running her own firm, Lydia dedicated the last seven years to serving those most in need through the Indigent Defense Program, ensuring that every individual — not just the privileged — has access to legal representation and justice.
Her peers across South Texas have recognized her integrity and leadership. Lydia was elected Director of District 12 on the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors, representing attorneys across 17 counties. She also served on the Hidalgo County Bar Association Board, and currently serves on both the State Bar Women in the Profession Committee and the local ethics and grievance committee.
Deeply involved in her faith and community, Lydia serves on the St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish Council, has volunteered with the Food Bank of the RGV’s Empty Bowls Committee, participated in Leadership McAllen, and supports local animal rescues.
In her announcement speech, Lydia spoke passionately about why she chose to run for District Attorney:
“I love this community. It’s where I was born, where I raised my family, and where I’ve built my career. But I also know we deserve better — a justice system that works for everyone, not just a few. I’m running because Hidalgo County deserves a District Attorney who will serve with integrity, transparency, and compassion — someone who will always put justice before politics.”
“As a mother, wife, and lifelong Valley resident, I believe our justice system must work for everyone — not just the powerful or politically connected,” Lydia added. “It’s time to restore integrity to the District Attorney’s Office and ensure that the people of Hidalgo County can once again trust those sworn to serve them. Justice must be for all.”
Lydia’s campaign for Hidalgo County District Attorney centers on transparency, ethical leadership, and a steadfast commitment to fairness, compassion, and accountability.
